Have you set your goals for 2013 yet?
If you’re serious about producing the results, here are three easy to apply tips that I guarantee will dramatically increase your chances of success.
(Although my examples use a simple personal goal, these tips are every bit as effective with more complex work or business goals.)
1. Be specific
When you set your goals be as specific as possible. “Lose five pounds” is a better goal than “lose some weight”, because it gives you a clear idea of what success looks like. Knowing exactly what you want to achieve will help to keep you motivated until you get there.
2. Make a simple plan
Think about the specific actions that need to be taken in order to reach your goal. Just promising you’ll “eat less” or “exercise more” is too vague – be clear and precise. “I’ll go to the gym for one hour every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 6:30 am” leaves no room for doubt about what you need to do, and whether or not you’ve actually done it.
3. Seize the moment
Even with specific goals and plans to achieve them, most people struggle to deliver, and the reason most of us give is “I didn’t have time.” However, throughout the day, you have lots of opportunities to act on your goals, and there is a simple way to make sure you use them.
Once you have your plan of specific actions, then add two further elements – when and where will you act on it, thus creating an if-then plan: “If it’s Monday morning at 6:30, then I’ll go to the gym for an hour.”
Clearly there is a bit more to consistently producing great results than just this, but I promise you, if you do nothing other than implement these three tips you will see a massive increase in your productivity.
